Canada Work Permits — PGWP, Employer-Specific & Open Permits

Canada offers several work permit routes — from the Post-Graduation Work Permit for graduates to employer-specific and open permits. Here's how the main options compare.

Two broad types of work permit

Canadian work permits fall into two families. An employer-specific (closed) work permit ties you to a named employer, role and often location. An open work permit lets you work for almost any employer in Canada — examples include the PGWP and the spousal open work permit.

    Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

The PGWP is an open work permit for graduates of eligible programs at eligible DLIs. Its length is linked to the length of your study program, up to a maximum set by IRCC. Eligibility rules — including which programs and fields qualify — are periodically updated, so confirm your program qualifies before you enrol.

PGWP work experience is valuable: skilled work in Canada can count toward Express Entry and many Provincial Nominee streams, making the PGWP a common bridge from studying to permanent residence.

    Employer-specific permits and the LMIA

Many employer-specific permits require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) — a document showing no Canadian worker was available for the role. Some roles are LMIA-exempt under international agreements or programs such as the International Mobility Program. The right route depends on your occupation, the employer and any trade agreements that apply.

From a work permit to PR

Skilled Canadian work experience is one of the strongest assets for permanent residence. Programs like the Canadian Experience Class reward in-Canada experience, and many PNP streams target workers already employed in the province. Planning your permit with your PR goal in mind can save years.
